Perfect Family Getaway at Edson Hill in Stowe, Vermont

If you are anything like us, the idea of camping or renting a big secluded lake house which allows the family to go on a bunch of hikes enjoying the peaceful scenery and all nature has to offer is so appealing. However, the responsibilities that come along with camping and rentals, such as: bringing food, cooking meals, keeping the place clean, and relying on our own senses for kid friendly hikes and safe activities, fun as it may be for the kids is unappealing for the adults. We wanted a getaway where we could be as carefree as our kids and enjoy being in nature without all the added responsibility and work.

We originally found Edson Hill in Stowe, Vermont through Instagram. Their photos were breathtaking and we could tell that their guests experience exactly what we were looking for on our Vermont mountain family getaway: scenic nature combined with luxury and elegance.

We knew our predictions were spot on as soon as we drove onto the estate.  Edson Hill’s picturesque landscape on top of a hill overlooking the inn’s serene pool, ponds, well manicured gardens, and a horse stable in the distance was exactly what we were looking for to get outside and explore.  During our stay, we visited the in-ground pool, explored around the gardens and stables, and went on multiple family walks around the grounds.  There are miles of cross country ski trails that you can hike in the summertime, which we loved having right at our fingertips. Seeing our kids in nature makes us so happy!  We just love watching them explore, imagine, and discover new things as we immerse ourselves in the outdoors.

Edson Hill provides the elegance and comfort we really appreciate in an accommodation, while traveling as a family. With only 21 rooms, the Inn definitely has that small boutique hotel feel.  We love smaller Inns because the hospitality and attention to detail is that much greater. We get to know the staff on a more personal level and build relationships as faces become more familiar throughout our stay.  We are so attracted to smaller hotels and the experience always reminds me of somewhere we would stay while traveling around Europe, so unlike those big impersonal chain hotels we have in America.

We stayed in the Laugh Uncontrollably room, which sleeps five and includes a king sized bed, twin trundle bed and another twin bed. The room was so spacious, and even had a walk-in closet, which was the perfect enclosed space for us to allow Charlie to sleep in her foldable kidco-peapod tent.  We had a window view of the pool and the outdoor dining patio. The windows had modern blackout shades, which was perfect to help little sleepers stay asleep at sunrise.  Room amenities included: extra pillows, bathrobes, bottled water, a mini-fridge, vanity kit, makeup face wipes, blow dryer and a flat screen TV. The decor was modern and chic with wall art and decorations unique to the area.  As soon as the kids walked into the room, they started playing with the tic tac toe stone decor set on the coffee table. It was so adorable and we really appreciated the unique touches

Breakfast is included in your stay, which is perfect when traveling with kids. We love not having to worry about finding a place to eat first thing in the morning with over hungry children. Our kids loved the French toast, goat milk yogurt and Irish oats. We loved the two eggs dish, hash and florentine benedict.  We ate our meals on the porch right in the warm sunlight and it was just delightful. The kids could roam around the grounds while we waited for our food and it was so peaceful to sip our coffee with such a lovely view!

Getting into town is only a 10 minute drive.  It is so quaint to walk around town window shopping, picking up a cup coffee or ice cream. Of course,  a few other great attractions are: Stowe recreation path, Weiness trail, Smugglers Notch, and the Van Tropp Brewery.

We highly recommend ending your day back at Edson Hill for dinner on the patio and grab drink at the bar while watching the sun set over the pond.  Matt loved his burger at dinner and the beer selection available at the bar featured so many local craft beers, we were impressed!  We noticed the evenings get chilly in the mountains, so we loved all heat lamps provided on the patio.

Returning to our room in the evening and finding beds made, fresh towels laid out, and waters refilled so we could enjoy a stress free bedtime with our kids is a welcome break from all the little extra responsibilities we have when we are home.  These little touches make us want to travel more. We feel refreshed, our kids appreciate the extra attention, we are able to invest in them during our time away and our family grows closer.
The next time you plan a getaway with your family, might we suggest you treat yourselves with the luxury and relaxation Edson Hill offers while still providing a carefree, fun filled experience for your children. It truly is the best of both worlds that you won’t regret.
