Ultimate guide to your Hawaiian getaway in Kauai

If you are planning a trip to Kauai, Hawaii, get ready for possibly the most breathtaking landscapes you’ve ever seen, pristine beaches, and unforgettable adventures. Whether you are traveling as a family, a couple, or solo, this island has something for everyone. Here is everything you need to know to make the most of your visit, from where to stay to the best activities to experience.

Where to stay: The Cliffs at Princeville

First, we HIGHLY recommend The Cliffs at Princeville to stay for an unforgettable trip. This oceanfront resort in amazing!! It offers stunning views and a peaceful yet family-friendly atmosphere. The accommodations are spacious, with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, a full kitchen for cooking, and a comfortable living space. We loved having so much space during this part of our trip because our son came down with a fever and we ended up cooking all our meals at “home” while one of us stayed with him, it was lovely sitting on the back porch and we were able to see many whales breach right from there! The resort also has great amenities, including swimming pools, a hot tub, playground, pickleball and basketball courts, bike rentals, sand toys, etc. It is an ideal base for exploring the island while enjoying a relaxing scenic retreat.

Must do activities in Kauai

Napali Coast by Air or Sea

A boat or helicopter tour along the Napali Coast is a must for experiencing Kauai’s most iconic scenery, since you cannot see it by car. The towering cliffs, sea caves, and waterfalls make this one of the most beautiful coastlines in Hawaii and the iconic spot where many scenes from Jurassic Park Blue was filmed.  Our family used Blue Dolphin Charters which provides an incredible experience with views that will take your breath away.  Included in this morning tour, we were served breakfast and lunch, taken to a perfect spot for snorkeling, guaranteed to see dolphins, we even saw multiple whales and a fantastic view of the Napoli Coast.

Hanalei Bay

Hanalei Bay on the North Shore is another must-visit destination. This crescent-shaped beach offers golden sand, mountain views, and calm waters during the summer, making it perfect for swimming. In the winter, the waves pick up and attract surfers from around the world. Staying to watch the sunset is highly recommended, as the sky turns into a beautiful mix of colors over the water.

Waimea Canyon

The most famous canyon in Kauai and often called the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific” and is even known for being more beautiful. You can explore Waimea Canyon through scenic viewpoints along Waimea Canyon Drive, as well as several hiking trails.

Hideaway Beach

Hideaway Beach is a more secluded spot that offers excellent snorkeling. The clear water, coral reefs, and diverse marine life make it a special place to visit. My husband saw multiple sea turtles while snorkeling along the beach.  The trail to the beach is steep and requires some effort, with ropes along the way to assist with the descent. Proper footwear is necessary, but the reward at the bottom is a quiet, beautiful beach surrounded by lush greenery.

Kilauea Lighthouse

Kilauea Lighthouse is another great stop with panoramic ocean views and a chance to see Hawaiian seabirds. Depending on the season, there is also the possibility of spotting whales in the distance. The scenic overlook makes for a great photo opportunity and a peaceful place to take in the beauty of the island.

Akamu Wellness

For those looking to relax, Akamu Wellness offers yoga sessions and massages right on the coast at The Cliffs at Princeville.  We booked a massage at sunset at it was perfect with a slight breeze and honestly one of the best massages I've ever had.  Don't miss this wellness experience to unwind while enjoying the natural surroundings. A massage here is a great way to recover after a day of hiking, swimming, or exploring.

Kauai is a destination that offers both adventure and relaxation. Whether you are taking in the views along the coast, enjoying a peaceful stay at a beautiful resort, or experiencing the island’s unique culture, there is something special about this place. It is a great choice for a memorable getaway filled with nature, outdoor activities, and stunning scenery.
