Escaping the Winter: Our Top 5 Family-Friendly Beach Destinations
If you’re reading this while shivering under a blanket or staring at a snow-covered driveway, this post is for you. We are all officially at that point in the season where "escaping the storm" isn't just a dream, it’s a necessity.
Over the last few years, our family has traded our puffy jackets for swimsuits in some truly incredible corners of the world. One thing I’ve realized as my kids get older is that the ocean is the ultimate "reset" button. There are no shoes, no rigid schedules, and plenty of sandcastles, but these specific spots also offer a deep dive into local culture. See some of our favorite beach vacation clips here!
If you’re ready to book your next getaway, here are the accommodations that have earned a permanent spot on our "favorites" list.
1. Hawaii: The Best of Kauai and the Big Island
Hawaii is amazing (did you know I was born there!?) and each island offers such a different vibe for families.
• The Cliffs at Princeville (Kauai): This isn't just a resort; it’s a home base. We love the condo-style setup because you get a full kitchen (crucial for easy family breakfasts) and massive lanais. There is nothing quite like sitting on your back porch with a coffee and watching whales breach in the distance while the kids play.
• Courtyard King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Hotel (Big Island): On the Big Island, this Marriott property is our go-to. The standout feature here is the calm, protected lagoon. It is easily the safest spot for toddlers and younger kids to splash in the ocean without worrying about heavy surf, allowing you to actually relax.
2. Belize: Chabil Mar
Located in the charming village of Placencia, Chabil Mar is a true "guest-exclusive" resort. Because it’s private, it feels incredibly safe to let the kids roam the grounds. The villas sit right on the water, and the service is unmatched—the staff truly treats you like family. Plus, you’re just a short stroll or bike ride from the village, making it easy to pop out for local food and exploration.
3. France: HĂ´tel Martinez
If you’re headed to the French Riviera, HĂ´tel Martinez in Cannes is the absolute dream. This Hyatt property is luxury at its finest but surprisingly great for families. It has its own private beach club, which takes the stress out of a "beach day." It’s iconic, stunningly beautiful, and located in a very walkable part of town, which is a lifesaver when you're traveling with kids.
4. Panama: The Buenaventura Golf & Beach Resort
Located in Rio Hato, this Marriott Autograph Collection property is a hidden paradise. The Buenaventura strikes that rare balance of "luxury meets kid-friendly." It features multiple pools, a private beach, and—the highlight for my kids—an on-site zoo! It feels like a private enclave where you can truly unplug.
5. Portugal: Belmar Spa & Beach Resort
While we always enjoy the Marriott in Lisbon for a city stay, the Belmar Spa & Beach Resort in Lagos is where the coastal magic happens. It overlooks Porto de MĂłs beach on the Algarve coast. It’s the perfect spot for long days of sun-drenched play in the sand and boat trips to explore the nearby sea caves.
Why the Beach?
People often ask why we choose the beach even as our kids get older. It’s simple: the ocean levels the playing field. Whether they are five or fifteen, the water brings out a sense of play that you just don't get anywhere else.
These resorts specifically allow us to have that relaxing "reset" while still being close enough to the local villages to experience the unique food, language, and heart of each country. Some of our best family memories aren't just from the luxury of the rooms, but from the simple moments of salt water and shared adventures.
