A Mountain Retreat in Northern Georgia at the Sassy Cabin

It was the middle of January when Matt and I started planning our February roadtrip down south and Matt said: “I’d just love to go to the mountains”.  Little did we know that we would discover the PERFECT spot for our family at the Sassy Cabin in Clayton, Georgia!

Clayton is such a darling southern town in North Georgia.  We fell in love with it as soon as we arrived. Clayton has everything you could possibly need right on it’s adorable walking Main Street.  From coffee shops, restaurants, shopping (even a toy store 😉) and more, you could spend the whole day right in town.

The Sassy Cabin

Our Cabin, fondly known as the Sassy Cabin, is under 10 minutes from Clayton, and located in the most beautiful scenic spot hidden in the woods.  This new and stylish cabin has everything you could possibly need for your family or a multiple couple getaway.  A spacious kitchen and living area, three large bedrooms with king sized beds & private bathrooms attached to each room, and a large back deck overlooking the most scenic views!

I would say the Sassy Cabin would be most perfect for families or a small group of couples on a getaway! I just love that every bedroom has it’s own king sized bed and attached bathroom.  The cabin is also equipped with a washer and dryer which is wonderful for families with small kids who may need to do a load of laundry during their trip.  The kitchen is fully functional with a stovetop, oven, microwave, dishwasher, and even a grill outside on the back porch.  The back deck was definitely our favorite spot, especially in the morning as the sun shone through the trees and we were able to enjoy breakfast right on the long outdoor table.  Sipping my coffee and soaking in that Georgia February sun while looking out at the breathtaking mountainous landscape took the cake for me.

In my opinion, the winter is the best time to come to the Sassy Cabin, the weather was just perfect for everything we wanted to do with temperatures between 60-70 degrees, no bugs, and I just love not feeling all sticky while we did day hikes and explored the town. It was definitely the perfect temperatures for our active family!

But best of all, the area surrounding Clayton is packed with the most amazing hikes, including the Appalachian Trail, water falls, and gorgeous lakes everywhere.

If you are planning to stay at the Sassy Cabin, here are a few of our favorite cafes, restaurants, and shops in Clayton, followed by a few hikes we did in the area with our kids!

Cafes

White Berch Provisions

I had to have a little café with all the coffee treats for breakfast… Matt and I both had quiches while the kids enjoyed a cinnamon bun, fruit, muffin, and chocolate chip banana bread. We also ordered a delicious green smoothie with apple and ginger. It was the perfect little spot; we all ate in their second floor lounge and the kids enjoyed looking down at all the people walking into the café.

Clayton Cafe

This is a perfect spot for lunch, or a cup of coffee and dessert and they even have ice cream for the kids! Please note that it closes at 3 PM and is not open on Wednesdays and breakfast is only served on Fridays and Saturdays! We enjoyed lunch here and everything was very reasonably priced and so yummy! Matt got a burger while, I enjoyed haddock.

The Farm House:

We loved going to The Farm House for dessert after our dinner! They sell coffee and made to order homemade donuts! We tried the apple crisp donut with whip cream, apple filling, and ice cream on top and it was way better than I expected! They also had a bunch of little toys for the kids to play with in the café. Our son loved playing with their little hot wheels toy! They didn’t want to leave!

Restaurants

Universal Joint:

We sat on their spacious front porch and enjoyed great food including a beet salad with grilled shrimp, fish tacos, chicken fingers and hot dogs!

Hush Cuban Kitchen:

This restaurant surprised us! It was so unique and yummy! The variety of Cuban rice bowls are just phenomenal and so tasty.

Shopping

Tree House on Main

I absolutely LOVED this shop! From home decor and furniture to stylish clothing and jewelry, this store had it all. Everything was super trendy and 100% my style. I couldn’t resist a new pair of earrings and could have spent the whole day shopping in this store alone!

Blue Ridge Toys:

This little toy store was the perfect spot for our kids! They had a little bit of everything dinosaurs, cacao critters, trucks, Pokémon accessories, Rubiks cubes, games, stuffed animals, etc.

Wander North Georgia:

This store was so cool we saw a bunch of necessities you might use when planning a hike. The best part of the store was at the bottom floor. There’s a whole area for kids to play!

Hiking

Minnehaha Falls Trail:

This is a perfect hike with families for small kids like ours. Only a .2 mile hike to the waterfall so we didn’t feel bad when the kids wanted to stop and climb a tree or look at the stream because we knew we didn’t have miles ahead of us.  The waterfall was beautiful and definitely worth visiting!

Appalachian Trail:

Our family only hiked a small portion of the Appalachian trail but it was so much fun! The kids loved wandering along the narrow paths in the forest and looking at all three greenish rocks along the way. We are just fascinated that the Appalachian trail goes all the way from Georgia to Maine!!
