How We Packed for France as a Family of 5 Using Only Carry-Ons

Becoming a “carry-on only family” has taken lots of intentionality but we’ve finally mastered it.  Traveling light means that every item in your bag has to earn its keep. We’ve found that by eliminating the just in case clutter, we actually enjoy our trips more: less time spent at baggage carousels and more time exploring.

But how exactly do we pull this off for a family of five without everyone wearing the exact same outfit for a week straight? It comes down to a few smart packing habits, eliminating the non-essentials, and using gear designed to maximize every inch of space. And for our latest trip, using two Hideaway Carry-On Duffel Bags from No Reception Club. They have completely transformed how we stay organized on the move.

Here is exactly how we make carry-on only travel work for our family.

The Secret Efficiency Tips: Laundry and Rolling

Two major routine shifts save us both time and space before we even start putting items into bags:

First, we save hours by doing one massive load of laundry right before a trip and packing all the clean clothes straight into the suitcases. Skipping the step of folding everything and putting them back into everyone's bedroom drawers eliminates an entire layer of pre-trip chores.

Second, forget folding your clothes into neat piles inside the bag. I am obsessed with rolling up the clothes instead. Rolling makes garments incredibly compact, and more importantly, it makes everything easier to find. When clothes are rolled side-by-side, you can see every single option at a glance without knocking over a neat stack of shirts just to find the one at the bottom.

Maximizing the No Reception Club Gear

Having the right gear is what makes fitting five people into carry-ons actually possible. The Hideaway Carry-On Duffel Bags act as organizational powerhouses.  Instead of a standard deep compartment where items get buried, these duffels are designed to keep things compartmentalized. To keep items even more organized, I used a bunch of No Reception Club organizing cases with a clear top so you can see all the contents inside. One of these cases features a brilliant second zipper that acts as a compression mechanism, squeezing out the extra air to make the contents as compact as possible.

I used the bags organizers to separate everyone’s tops and bottoms so the kids know exactly which section holds their items and they can access everything so easily. It prevents the inevitable chaos of a traditional duffel bag where everything gets mixed together by day two.

What We Pack (and What We Shockingly Skip)

Our overall packing philosophy focuses on versatile layers that transition easily.

For the girls, essentials include basics and dresses if the weather allows, since they are easy to grab without needing to mix and match. For colder days, leggings, a tank, and a long open sweater or jean jacket do the trick.

For the boys, we pack a mix of polos, pants, shorts, and a swimsuit. We also never skip raincoats/warm top layer and hats for weather protection, though we usually wear those heavy layers on the plane.

The biggest surprise for my readers? We completely skip packing pajamas. I mentioned this on my Instagram post and people were shocked, but it is a massive space saver. Instead, we just pack workout shorts and a t-shirt or tank to wear to bed. If we happen to run out of clothes due to an unexpected spill, those bedtime clothes can easily double as an outfit on a travel day.

Keeping Essentials Accessible

For everything outside of clothing, we keep the kits highly curated:

Toiletries & Wellness: I keep a prepared bag of everything in travel sizes that we just grab and go when packing. This includes the daily care basics, sunscreen, and a small health kit pouch with pain relievers, vitamins, and band-aids so we don't have to hunt down a local pharmacy for minor hiccups.

On-the-Move Organization: For the actual travel day, No Reception Club sent over fanny packs that have become our ultimate airport companions. Instead of digging into a duffel bag while standing in line, the fanny packs keep our absolute non-negotiables right at my belly.  I suggest putting in passports, driver's licenses, phone chargers, headphones, and any quick grab snacks to keep the kids happy during long transits.

Traveling light isn't about what you leave behind; it's about the freedom you gain when you aren't weighed down by bags. With the right folding techniques and specialized gear like the Hideaway Duffels, managing a family of five with just carry-ons goes from a challenge to an absolute breeze.
