Traveling Light: The Essentials We Never Leave Home Without (And Bonus Cheat Sheet Below!)

I’m soooo excited to share with you lessons I’ve learned about traveling light… it wasn’t all that way, but I’ve learned sooo much over the years and to be honest, traveling light is SO freeing!!! So here we go: mastering the art of the "carry-on only" lifestyle!  It takes being incredibly intentional- when you travel light, every item in your bag has to earn its keep. We’ve found that by eliminating the "just in case" clutter, we actually enjoy our trips more… less time spent at baggage carousels and more time exploring.

While we keep our packing lists lean, there are a few non-negotiables. Here is the breakdown of our current travel essentials, curated for maximum efficiency and comfort.

Clothing & Outerwear

We focus on versatile layers that can transition from a casual day out to a nice dinner.

• For Women/girls: Essentials include basics (undergarments & socks) and I almost always wear dresses if the weather allows- it's easier to grab and not have to mix and match.  For colder days I’ll bring leggings a tank and a long open sweater/jean jacket. Yes, I will wear the legging multiple days. 🙃 And of course swimwear if we will be heading to a pool or beach during the trip.

• For Men/boys: A mix of polos, jeans, shorts and one swimsuit, along one or two long-sleeve shirts if it may be cold. I let my boys wear sweat pants on the plane but don’t love them wearing them out and about in the city.

• The Weather-Ready Layer: We never skip raincoats for rain/cold and hats block the sun. We generally wear those on the plane and these are essential if the weather turns.

Skip the pajamas: You all were SHOCKED when I stated on Instagram that we don’t pack pajamas- I generally just pack workout shorts and a t-shirt/tank to wear to bed that if needed can be worn on a travel day if we accidentally run out of clothes. 😅

Toiletries & Wellness

Staying fresh and healthy on the road is a priority, but we keep the kit compact. I usually have a prepared bag of everything in travel sizes that we just “grab and go” when packing- it makes it sooo much easier that way!

• Daily Care: Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, lotion, makeup and hair care basics.

• The "Must-Haves": We always pack sunscreenlip balm, and shaving supplies.

• Health Kit: A small pouch with pain relieversvitamins, and band-aids is essential for handling minor hiccups without needing to find a local pharmacy immediately.

 Travel Essentials

These are the items that make the actual journey manageable.

• Snacks are life-savers on long flights or train rides.

• Documentation: We carry the basics—Passport/VisaDriver’s License, and a Lounge Pass for those much-needed airport breathers.

 Technology & Work

Even on a light trip, we need to stay connected and productive.

• The Basics: Cellphone, laptop, and their respective chargers.

• Entertainment: Headphones are a non-negotiable for blocking out noise.

        • Productivity: We always bring along work documents

Miscellaneous Bits

• The "Just in Case": An umbrella and a collapsible tote (perfect for market finds, extra layers or beach days).

• The Essentials: Wallet, cash, and credit cards.

Cheat sheet: And for those of you who just need a list, here it is!!

The Philosophy: Traveling light isn't about what you leave behind; it's about the freedom you gain when you aren't weighed down. By sticking to this list, we stay prepared for anything while keeping our footprint small.
