Overnight... Without Our Kids!!!

Last weekend, Matt and I finally left both boys to spend the night just the two of us.  I was sooo nervous about leaving Christopher (10 months) overnight, but I knew it was time, and Matt's been begging me for a while to do a night away.
The whole thing worked out because we were going to a friend's 40th birthday party in the suburbs, which meant we were able to hang out in the city for a few hours and then stop back at my parents' house to feed Christopher on the way to the party.  So Christopher really only missed one main feeding first thing the next morning.  I had been working on sleep training Christopher the whole month, and he was sleeping through the night; but two nights prior to our overnight, he randomly woke up in the middle of the night!  I was soooo worried that he would wake up my mom all night long and it would be horrible for her.  Fortunately, he slept great and woke up at 5:30am but fell back asleep until 8:15am!!!! Major score!  Of course, I couldn't sleep in, even though we stayed up late.  I think as moms we become so used to waking up early with our kids, that we lose the ability to sleep in, or something! ;-)
The first few hours without the boys felt soooo weird.  We are just always so used to chasing after them and being busy, it felt so quiet to not have them around.  But then we were like, okay, we have to do everything that we normally can't do when we are traveling in a city with our kids!  So, we stopped at The Terrace at Delaware Park and sat on the patio with a gorgeous view of Hoyt Lake, enjoyed a drink...without any disruptions! ☺  That evening we HAD to stay out late (which we never do because we always feel bad making a babysitter/grandparents stay up late at our house).  It was funny, because all we REALLY wanted to do was catch up on all that sleep we've lost the past three years of our lives 😉, but we did manage to push through. lol!  The next morning we split a breakfast and some muuuch needed coffee at the hotel, and then went to JT's for an AMAZING brunch.  They just opened a couple months ago and literally we both were like- holy cow, how could every bite be so amazing!?  Of course, by the end of brunch I was dying to see the boys, so we headed home. The screams of joy and laughter when the boys saw us was absolutely adorable.  Something about time apart makes being reunited so worth it!!!
We stayed at Hotel Henry, built in 1870, which was amazing.  Back in the day, it was the Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane.  You can read more about the history of the building here.  I still remember back in college, going on runs right by the building and always looking at it with awe at it's beautiful architecture!  Now, finally restored as Hotel Henry, Matt and I couldn't wait to see inside!  It's huge!  We literally got lost a handful of times!  The high ceilings and gorgeous detail throughout the building was breathtaking.  Our room was gorgeous and I loved how they kept an old pillar that was original to the time period it was built!
As much as we are obsessed with our two boys, we know how important it is to spend time alone as a couple.   And of course, both boys are still in one piece and not in the least bit traumatized from being away from their mama for just one night.  I think sometimes (okay, most times) it's harder on us than them!  (Yes, "mom guilt" is a VERY real thing).  But I am sooo glad we did this overnight and will definitely go on more in the future (hopefully soon! ☺).
Thank you Hotel Henry for a beautiful weekend! xoxo
